Most phone lines can only support 33.6Kbps speed of communication. Please call your local phone company to check the speed of their line. Another factor is the quality of the phone line cable. If the cables have cracks on them, or the phone line is exposed. This can play an essential role in the speed of the connection.

What are the factors that can affect the Internet connection performance?

Initialization String. This is probably the most common cause of data speed problems. A browser's dialer program sends commands to the modem before dialing the required telephone number. These commands set-up the modem for different types of connections. Apart from some basic commands, most commands are specific to a particular modem. A command that disables compression on one modem might do something completely different on another modem. Incorrect modem settings in the dialer program may cause very slow connections or other unpredictable problems. Sometimes, it is possible to improve performance by adding to or changing the initialization string.

Processing Power. Since HTML pages contain formatting information mixed in with plain text, they require processing to turn them into the formatted pages that appear on your browser. A faster processor and more memory will speed up this processing.

Internet Activity. Sometimes, loading of a Web pages or downloading may seem sluggish. This is due to the number of Internet users around the world being on the same website at the same time or even downloading from the same site’s server. Some sites would publish their peak and off-peak hours and suggest for you to download at a later time. Others, though, have a quick fix simply by refreshing the page (seen on your browser or press F5).

Phone Line. Depending on the phone company you are subscribed to, there may be instances of a noisy phone line. This is a common incident in the Philippines. To test for this, simply lift your handset and press any number. Listen carefully for static, cross-talk, and other sound. The physical cables may not be installed securely. Check for loose connections and have a professional adjust the cables.

How could I improve my Internet connection speed?

Basic tips on how to improve your speed:

DTE Rate - Set this as high as possible. Usually 230,400 bps will likely become the norm on newer PCs. If nothing happens when you log on change the setting to a slower rate and try again.

Compression - Make sure that compression is used on your connections.

Error Control - Make sure your modem is set to LAPM (V .42) error control rather than MNP which is around 20% slower.

Modem Line Rate - Force your modem to connect at a lower speed (2400 or 4800 bps less) if it retrains (pauses transmission and re-negotiates the connection) often or your calls break down frequently. Many modems, by default disconnect after a certain number of re-transmits of a data block. A stable connection at a lower speed can often give more data throughput than an unstable connection. Check your modem's handbook to find out how to set the maximum line rate.
